Diabetes Prevention Program DPP Stories and News
Diabetes by the Numbers
No this is a prevention program. It is designed for people who are at risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes. There is a different program to help those who have a diagnosis manage their diabetes- Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME)
The program meets for 26 sessions over a year-long period. The first 16 sessions are every week, the next few sessions meet bi-weekly and the last 6 sessions are once a month. It is important to check your calendar to make sure you can make the commitment to attend classes for the full year as we know people who attend most of the classes have better results!
No, you will not be asked to exercise during the meeting, instead you will learn different strategies for being active and may be able to try some out during the class period. The main focus of the meeting is to learn new skills, share information with your group members and feel supported in making changes in your habits and routines.
There are many other programs that the Y offers that you can join! Kickstart Your Confidence is a 12-week program similar to the Diabetes Prevention Program. It is a program designed to help you develop healthier habits and gain confidence in reaching your healthy weight! In this 12-week program you will meet in a supportive group led by a trained coach to learn about healthy eating, being active and effective goal setting. You will also meet fitness and nutrition staff to gain extra support. See more here: The Y also offers the Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring program which is a 4 month program designed to help support people with high blood pressure. In this program you will learn the causes of high blood pressure and how to control it through eating healthy and proper at home measurements.
