Learn About Membership Holds and Join Fees

April 30, 2024

At the YMCA you have so many options for wellness, connection, learning and growth. Having options is great, and that’s why we’ve made a couple changes to our membership policy — to give you more options to make your Y membership work best for you.

We are bringing back membership holds and join fees to give you added membership flexibility, to improve organizational stability and, most importantly, to enhance the experience of community and belonging at your YMCA.

Membership Holds

The YMCA of Metro Denver used to offer the option to hold or "freeze" your membership at a lower monthly fee, and we are bringing this benefit back. As of May 1, 2024, you can put your YMCA of Metro Denver membership on hold for $10 per month for up to 6 months.

If you’ll be away for an extended period, consider putting your membership on hold so you don’t have to cancel. This can save you money, as it allows you to maintain your current membership rate and avoid paying a join fee to reactivate your membership.

Annual and Virtual memberships are not eligible to be put on hold.

How to Put Your Membership on Hold

Complete the online member contact-us form or visit the front desk of your wellness center. You can set a date to reactivate your membership or simply contact us to reactivate it at any time.

Continued Benefits

While your membership is on hold, you maintain access to virtual Y, YMCA360 and YMCA nationwide membership benefits. Find more information on our Nationwide Benefit

Facility Access

During a membership hold, your access to Denver YMCA wellness centers is restricted throughout all Denver locations. You do not have access to fitness spaces, equipment, pools, gyms, sports areas, locker rooms or group fitness classes. You may purchase a service, such as personal training, at the non-member price and use the facility during your session only.

Member Pricing

During a membership hold, you do not have access to member pricing on fee-based services, such as:

  • Personal Training
  • Pilates Reformer
  • Health Coaching
  • Nutrition Consultation
  • Massage Therapy
  • Summer Camp
  • Youth Sports
  • Out of School Time
  • Workshops, series and classes

Example: If you’ve registered for Summer Camp and put your membership on hold, you will be responsible for the non-member price of camp. Similarly, if you put your Y Your Way membership on hold and have active registrations for eligible programs, you will be responsible for the non-member price of the program.

Join Fees

In the past, the YMCA of Metro Denver charged a join fee — an additional, one-time fee to activate a new YMCA membership, on top of the prorated value of the membership purchased. For several years, we have only charged a membership fee for new memberships, not a join fee. The join fee will be reintroduced beginning this year. As of June 1, 2024, there will be a $50 join fee for all new YMCA of Metro Denver memberships.

Details

A one-time join fee is due at point of membership purchase for Y-Starter and Premium memberships. There are no join fees for Virtual, Annual and Y Your Way memberships. Join fees do not apply to membership upgrades or downgrades. For multiple-person memberships (i.e. Household and Couple), only one join fee is charged.

Cancellations

If a membership is later cancelled and the member chooses to re-join the YMCA, a join fee will be due at point of purchase. Instead of cancellation, consider putting your membership on hold for $10 per month for up to 6 months. Complete the online member contact-us form to request a membership hold or visit the front desk of your wellness center.

Scholarships

Join fees for scholarship recipients will be discounted based on the scholarship award amount.

Join fees help us maintain affordable membership rates and stabilize our member base, which supports organizational sustainability and a strong member community. You come to the Y to see familiar faces and feel a sense of community — join fees help make that possible.
