April 18, 2022
After a two-year hiatus from in-person, Youth in Government was back at the Aurora Municipal Court House April 8-10, 2022. More than 60 students converged for this youth leadership event.
Pressing issues included assault weapons ban, requiring colleges with a population of >10K to lower education prices for a better experience; decriminalizing the possession of small quantities of illegal drugs; preventing illegal immigration into Colorado to encourage legal immigration; and making the domesticated pigeon the Colorado State Bird. (We’re quite the last one was for humor!)
Joining the students were guest speakers Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman, Former U.S. Department of Housing and urban Development Regional Administrator Evelyn Lim, the Honorable Echo Ryan and YMCA of Metro Denver Board Chair Rick Rush.
YIG is one of Y-USAs oldest programs and an amazing program fostering an interest in government, character development and leadership among teens.
The program will be back at the State Capitol Building in Nov. 2022.
