YMCA Lifeguard Certification

This comprehensive course offers up-to-date information on how to guard by anticipating and preventing problems before they occur and by taking action to help those in danger when necessary. It also covers the safety and survival skills every swimmer needs to know, accident prevention, guarding techniques, emergency systems, rescue skills, first aid in aquatic environments, spinal injury management, weather and open water dangers, legal responsibilities, pool management, and information on how to get a job as a lifeguard. Certification will depend on successful completion of all skills (100%), 32 hours of class work, a 2 hour practical experience, and passing scores (80%) on all written tests. The book will be included in the course fee. All classes must be attended for certification! Participants must be at least 16 years of age by the course end date and have strong swimming skills. A prerequisite swim test will be administered including a 500 yard swim (combining head-up front crawl, head-up breast stroke, one-arm sidestroke, sidestroke and elementary backstroke); head-first surface dive with 15 foot underwater swim; tread water 2 minutes - legs only; and a deep water/timed swim object retrieval. The prerequisite certification courses of American Red Cross CPR/AED-PR with Oxygen Administration and First Aid will be taught separately prior to course date. The YMCA Lifeguard certification is valid for 2 years. The First Aid certification is valid for 3 years. The CPR/PR/AED/O2 certifications are valid for 1 year.  $250 for non-members; $200 for YMCA members

American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification

This ARC course teaches the skills and knowledge necessary to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. This course includes CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer with Oxygen Administration and Standard First Aid. Participants must be at least 15 years of age by the course end date and have strong swimming skills. A prerequisite swim test will be administered including a 500 yard swim (combining head-up front crawl, head-up breast stroke, one-arm sidestroke, and elementary backstroke); head-first surface dive with 15ft. underwater swim; tread water 2 minutes legs only; and a deep water/timed swim object retrieval. Certification will depend on successful completion of all skills (100%), 30 hours of class work, a 2 hour practical experience, and passing scores (80%) on all written tests. The book and resuscitation mask will be included in the course fee. All classes must be attended for certification! ARC Lifeguard/First Aid certifications are valid for 3 years, the CPR/PR/AED/O2 certifications are valid for 1 year.

YMCA Swim Instructor Certification Class

This is an introductory course teaching the basics of instructing aquatic classes that are student-centered, value oriented, safe, and effective in teaching aquatic skills. Participants must be at least 16 years of age with strong swimming skills. Minimum prerequisites include current certifications in CPR/AED-PR, First Aid, and AED/Oxygen Administration. Participants must successfully complete the written test, perform all practical skills, demonstrate the ability to lead and teach swim lessons and be fully involved in the course. Contact the Aquatic Director for dates and times.
