A History of Leadership

The national Youth in Government program began in 1936 with the founder’s belief that democracy must be learned by each generation. Clement “Pete” Duran “Democracy knew that a dynamic civic experience was imperative to teaching students about government, and instilling the values of democracy American is built on.

Today, the YMCA National Youth in Government Program operates in over 40 states.

Colorado’s Youth in Government Program brings together more than 150 students every year from schools throughout the state.

Many Youth in Government students go on to get accepted at acclaimed colleges and universities, often earning scholarships. And Youth in Government alumni are statistically more likely than other citizens to vote, get involved, and volunteer for campaigns.
